The League of Women Voters of Greater Birmingham
provides voter information for Alabama special elections Nonpartisan voter guide available at VOTE411.org Birmingham, AL – Ahead of special state legislative elections on July 13th, the League of Women Voters of Greater Birmingham (LWVGB) is offering the nonpartisan election resource VOTE411.org. This “one-stop shop” for election information provides simple, helpful tools to help Alabama voters navigate the voting process. The VOTE411 voter guide provides unbiased candidate information, a voter registration tool, polling place information, and other helpful election information for all voters. Special state legislative races for Alabama House District 73 and Alabama Senate District 14 will be on ballots. At VOTE411.org, LWVGB is giving the candidates in those races the opportunity to post their contact and social media information and answers to questions concerning district issues. The VOTE411 project is underwritten by the League of Women Voters Education Fund. The seat for House District 73, which lies within Shelby County, came open when Matt Fridy was elected to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals in November 2020. Sheridan Black (D) and Kenneth Paschal (R) are on the ballot. The Alabama Senate District 14 seat became vacant when Cam Ward was appointed on December 7, 2020 by Gov. Kay Ivey as the director of Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles. Senate District 14 includes parts of Bibb, Chilton, Shelby, and Hale Counties and a very small portion of Jefferson County. Those vying for the seat are Virginia Applebaum (D) and April Weaver (R) “Voters in Shelby County and surrounding counties need simple, accessible tools to help them navigate the voting process before the special elections on July 13th. We are pleased to offer this information about legislative candidates and races in our area,” said Dana Ellis, president of the League of Women Voters of Greater Birmingham. “VOTE411 is the nation’s premiere online election resource, and the League of Women Voters of Greater Birmingham has published our voter guide on VOTE411 to serve as a resource for all voters in our area.” VOTE411 helps millions of voters each year—many of them young people and first-time voters—learn about candidate stances, look up what’s on their ballot, find their polling place, and more. The League of Women Voters, now in its 102nd year, provides various nonpartisan voter services, including registering voters, assisting returning citizens to reinstate their voting rights, providing election information, holding candidate forums, and educating citizens about complex public issues. The League focuses special attention on underserved communities and students in high schools, colleges, universities, and trade schools and other first-time voters. Ellis said, “The League is also working to make voting safe and accessible to all voters in Alabama. We consider it part of our mission to ‘empower voters and defend democracy.’” Ellis continued, “The League of Women Voters of Greater Birmingham is pleased to provide this important, nonpartisan resource to voters. We encourage voters to visit VOTE411.org and make a voting plan so that they are prepared to cast an informed vote on Tuesday, July 13th.” ### The mission of the League of Women Voters Education Fund is to provide funding for projects designed to inform and educate citizens on issues of government and public policy to facilitate their active and informed participation in government.
