LWVGB Membership Meeting

January 25, 2011, 6:30 pm., Homewood Library.
Topic: Sustainable Cities Will Flourish – Birmingham Could Be One.
Speaker: Michael Churchman, Executive Director, Alabama Environmental Council.

A sustainable community requires interconnected services, starting with the most basic human needs for breathing, eating and drinking, eliminating, and obtaining adequate shelter and some mobility. When we use resources faster than nature can generate new ones and create waste faster than nature can absorb it, an under-appreciated ecological bankruptcy is the result. Churchman highlighted some of the ways energy and water are interconnected and efforts being made to use them more efficiently, as well as advances in community recycling. Read more information about this topic in the January 2011 issue of The Voter (LWVGB newsletter). The meeting was well attended by the public. The public was invited to attend and share ideas about moving towards sustainability in the greater Birmingham area and learn how to become part of the process.
