REGISTER TO VOTE


Requirements for Registering to Vote

Any person may register to vote, provided that he or she: 
  • is a citizen of the United States;
  • resides in Alabama;
  • is at least 18 years old on or before election day; [A person may APPLY to register to vote when they are 17 and 1/2 years old. Not approved until the person turns 18.]
  • has not been barred from voting due to a disqualifying felony conviction;
  • and has not been declared mentally incompetent by a court.
Applicants may register the same day that they move into the state.
Victims of domestic violence and guardians of victims of domestic violence
may obtain information regarding special legal protections related to
personal identifying information.  For further information, contact the
Secretary of State at 334-242-7210 or your local Board of Registrars.

Ways to Register to Vote


Fill out Voter Registration form online (must have AL driver's license or AL non-driver ID) and submit online.

Getting free photo voter ID when disabled
  • If a person needs a free photo voter ID and is house-bound due to disability and without Internet service, the AL Secretary of State's Elections Division will come to a residence to take the ID photo and application.

Get an Absentee Ballot Application if you need it at least 5 days before election. IMPORTANT: Although that is the law, for the General Election on Nov. 3, we strongly recommend that you obtain your absentee ballot and submit that NO LATER THAN mid-October, 2020 - the earlier the better!

AFTER ELECTION DAY

If you vote a provisional ballot, you may need to take validatiing document(s) to the courthouse by Friday following the Tuesday election to prove that you are a registered voter and voting at the right polling place. Take the document(s) that prove(s) your case for voting at the polling location where you cast your provisional ballot.(e.g. valid photo ID, proof of residency, etc.)
